Day 5: Grace Is Not Taken from Your Portion
Main Scripture:
“Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.” — Luke 15:31
Devotional:
The older brother in Jesus’ parable could not celebrate his brother’s return. He saw the father’s generosity as an insult to his own faithfulness. The workers in another parable reacted similarly when those who arrived late received the same wage. Grace given to someone else felt like something taken from them.
That same insecurity can appear quietly in us. We may struggle when a person with a troubled past is restored, welcomed, or given a new opportunity. We compare their story with our years of service and think, “Why them? What about me?”
The father’s answer to the older son is tender: “You are always with me, and all that I have is yours.” The celebration did not reduce the older brother’s place in the household. The father’s mercy toward the returning son did not make the other son less loved.
God’s grace is not distributed from a limited portion. His kindness toward another person does not empty His hands toward you. Their forgiveness does not erase your faithfulness. Their opportunity does not prove that your obedience was unnoticed.
Spiritual jealousy often reveals that we have begun relating to God as employees rather than children. Employees compare wages. Children are invited to trust the Father’s heart.
This does not mean every role, consequence, or opportunity must be identical. Grace does not remove wisdom or accountability. It means we refuse to resent mercy simply because it reaches someone whose story looks different from ours.
When God restores another person, you can remain outside counting what they received, or you can enter the Father’s joy. Ask Him to heal the insecurity behind comparison. His goodness toward them is not evidence that He has forgotten you. It is evidence that His heart is generous.
Reflection Questions:
- Whose restoration, recognition, or opportunity has been difficult for you to celebrate?
- What does your comparison reveal about how you currently view God’s generosity toward you?
- How can you enter God’s joy over another person without jealousy?
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for the times I have treated another person’s grace as my loss. Heal the insecurity that makes me compare stories, rewards, opportunities, or restoration. Remind me that I am not merely working for You; through Christ, I belong to Your household. Teach me to trust Your wisdom when Your generosity looks different from what I expected. Help me celebrate repentance, welcome restoration, and rejoice when mercy reaches someone who needs it. Keep me from self-righteousness and resentment. Root me in the assurance that Your goodness toward others does not diminish Your love or faithfulness toward me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
